Van Gogh exhibitions Barcelona has hosted before
Barcelona has had two major Van Gogh experiences in recent years, which is why the search keeps coming up.
Meet Vincent van Gogh Experience, 2019. The Van Gogh Museum's own touring exhibition ran in a 1,500 m² pavilion in Port Vell from 14 March to 14 July 2019. It was an interactive show about Van Gogh's life rather than a projection room.
El Mundo de Van Gogh, 2021 to 2022. An immersive projection show by Nomad Art ran under the dome of Las Arenas at Plaça d'Espanya from 25 November 2021 to 21 March 2022, with tickets from about €10 to €15. This is the show that most "Van Gogh immersive experience Barcelona" searches still point to.
Did Van Gogh ever come to Barcelona?
No. Vincent van Gogh (1853 to 1890) never travelled to Spain. According to the Van Gogh Museum, his life moved between the Netherlands, England, Belgium and France, where he painted his best-known work in Paris, Arles, Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Auvers-sur-Oise.
The Barcelona connection runs through Picasso instead. Picasso first travelled from Barcelona to Paris in 1900, ten years after Van Gogh's death, and the two never met. The Museu Picasso and the Van Gogh Museum later co-organised "Devouring Paris. Picasso 1900-1907", an exhibition of about one hundred works that showed the young Picasso next to the painters he absorbed in Paris, including some Van Goghs. The Van Gogh paintings people are looking for
Most people searching for a Van Gogh show want the famous images: the sunflowers, the starry night, the bedroom in Arles. Those are real paintings in a handful of museums, and none of them is in Spain. "The Starry Night" (1889) belongs to the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Van Gogh painted several versions of "Sunflowers" in Arles, and two of the best known hang in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the National Gallery in London.
Immersive shows do not display these paintings. They project enlarged, animated images based on them. That is why the same "Van Gogh experience" can tour dozens of cities at once, and why none of them needs a museum loan. If you want the brushwork itself, you need a museum; if you want to be surrounded by moving images, an immersive room will do.
Where to see real Van Gogh paintings from Barcelona
Madrid, Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza. The closest real Van Goghs to Barcelona are in Madrid. The Thyssen owns "The Stevedores in Arles" (1888), on display in Room 34, and "Les Vessenots in Auvers" (1890), which is in the collection but not on display at the moment. museothyssen.org
Madrid, Nomad Museo Inmersivo. Madrid's Nomad Museo Inmersivo on Gran Vía has been showing "El Mundo de Van Gogh". Its official site and Madrid's tourism site give different information about when it ends, so check the venue directly before you travel for it.

Immersive exhibitions to see in Barcelona instead
If what you wanted was the feeling of walking into a painting, Barcelona has several options open now.
SABDA's new immersive show (Eixample), from 17 October
Full disclosure: SABDA is our venue. SABDA's new immersive show is a 25 minute journey through four worlds of life on Earth, made in Unreal Engine and projected across the four walls of a 360° room with Dolby Atmos sound, for 25 people per session at C/ Muntaner 83B in the Eixample.
It is not about a painter. It is about life on Earth, seen at animal eye level, so that for 25 minutes you become one of the animals. It opened on 17 October 2026 and runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets cost €20 for adults and €12 for children, including a welcome glass of cava or juice in SABDA Café. Dalí Boulevard Cibernètic
The closest thing in Barcelona to a painter-led immersive show. It sits in Casa Amatller at Passeig de Gràcia 41, costs from €15 on weekdays and €18 at weekends, and takes about 75 minutes.
Casa Batlló and the Gaudí Cube
Gaudí rather than Van Gogh, but the house is the real thing, and every ticket includes the Gaudí Cube, a six-sided LED room with a work by Refik Anadol. From €29, children up to 12 free.
Goya Universe
An immersive show about Goya at the Centre d'Art Amatller, from €9. The venue lists it as in its "last days" without giving an end date, so check before going.
