What Is Sound Healing? Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Session

You've probably heard the term "sound healing" or "sound bath" and had one of two reactions: either you're curious, or you think it sounds like something involving crystals and a woman named Luna. Fair. But sound healing is simpler and more interesting than the worst versions of it suggest.

Here's what it actually is, what happens in a session, and why the space you do it in matters more than you'd think.


What sound healing is (without the woo)

Sound healing is a practice where acoustic instruments. Tibetan singing bowls (cuencos tibetanos), crystal bowls, gongs, tuning forks, chimes. Are played in a way designed to shift your nervous system state. You lie down, close your eyes, and the sound does the work. There's no guided meditation you have to follow. No mantras. No affirmations. You just listen.

The instruments produce sustained tones and overtones that overlap, creating interference patterns. Beats and textures that your brain can't quite track or predict. That unpredictability is the point. Your brain stops trying to organise what it's hearing and relaxes its grip.

A session typically lasts 60 minutes. You lie on a mat with a blanket. Most people fall into a state somewhere between deep relaxation and sleep. Some people see colours or patterns behind their eyelids. Some people just feel very, very still.

Crystal singing bowls: Made from quartz crystal. They produce pure, clear tones that sustain for a long time. The sound is bright, almost electronic-sounding.

Gongs: Produce complex, layered sound with long sustain. A gong wash. When the practitioner gradually builds the volume. Can be the most physically intense part of a session. You feel it in your chest.

Tuning forks: Produce very specific, clean frequencies. Sometimes placed near the body (not on it) to create localised vibration.

Chimes and bells: Lighter, higher-frequency sounds used to begin and end sessions or to create contrast.

Most practitioners use a combination. The layering of different timbres and frequencies is what makes a sound bath immersive rather than monotonous.


What to expect in your first session

You arrive. You lie down on a mat. Someone gives you a blanket and maybe an eye mask. The practitioner introduces the session (usually 2-3 minutes), and then the sound starts.

For the first 5 minutes, you might feel restless. Your brain is still in "doing" mode. Then the layers build and your thinking slows down. Some people describe it as "melting." Others say it feels like floating. The sensation of time distorts. An hour feels like 25 minutes.
